Revamped Cholmondeley show has need for speed

Posted on Jun 03, 2016

A new name and format will greet the tens of thousands of petrolheads hitting Cholmondeley this weekend for the Cheshire venue’s annual motorfest. Perhaps in recognition of the fact the event has often been labelled as “the North’s Goodwood” the organisers have this year rebranded the former Pageant of Power as Cholmondeley Power & Speed. The new emphasis is further underlined by the show’s 2016 theme, Supercars: past, present and future which will see an incredible array of modern and historic vehicles on display and taking to the 3.2 mile track. These span some nine decades, with the show’s most venerable veteran being a 1923 Alfa Romeo with the supercar story brought bang up to date courtesy of Aston Martin’s N430, BAC’s extraordinary Mono, Bentley’s Bentayga Chassis no. 1, BMW’s M4 coupe and McLaren’s 675LT and Ariel’s mighty Atom, seen in this video testing what will be the track come next Friday. But, as ever, Cholmondely isn’t all about four-wheeled wonders with the show demonstrating power and speed via a stunning collection of motorcycles and breathtaking action in the air and water.Cholmondeley Power & Speed 2016  The bike line-up also spans the ages, the collection of mighty two-wheelers ranging from a 1923 Indian Scout to Kawasaki’s awesome 2015 H2 Ninja supercharged sportsbike, Cholmondeley Power & SpeedCholmondeley Powerr & Speed 2016claimed by MotorCycle News as “one of the most exciting road bikes ever built.” Classic bike buffs will surely also be excited by the appearance of the 1959 Vincent Viscount which, when hitting a near 132mph, claimed an AMA World Land Speed Record. Up above the Cheshire countryside display pilot Mark Petrie will be putting a BAC Strikemaster through its paces, demonstrating the speed and nimbleness of the Armstrong Siddeley Viper Mk2 turbojet-engined aircraft – the Hunting Jet Provost. You’d think a bi-plane would be a little more sedate but the G-EWIZ has more muscle to show off than a bodybuilders' convention. The specially modified, six cylinder, nine litre aircraft, is capable of extraordinary aerobatics, including hovering, Harrier-like, on its high-performance MT propeller and the infamous Tower of Power stunt perfected by pilot Richard Goodwin. Back on terra-firma The Sporting Bears Motor Club will be hosting Dream Rides, an opportunity to enjoy a ten-mile passenger ride in any one of some 30 different, usually privately owned and driven cars. It’s a nice touch, not least as drivers give up both their time and their vehicles for free, asking only that dream riders make a donation to charity. It’s an experience kids will also love, a pointer to the family-friendly nature of a festival which also lets the little ones have a go at driving a mini-tank, flying in a simulator, tackling an aerial rope course and, of course, having fun at the fair. You’ll also find us as excitable as a toddler on candy-floss as the Principal specialist motor insurance team will be on hand for all three days of the show.
