Principal head to London Motorcycle Show

Posted on Feb 13, 2017

We're bringing some truly capital customs to this weekend's season-opening MCN London Motorcycle Show. Organised by top bikers' weekly MotorCycle News, the event is the first of 2017's big bike shows - and it's lining up to be a belter. All the big boys of the biking world are displaying their wares. Triumph is giving a UK debut to its shiny new-for-2017 Street Triple range featuring a Daytona developed 765cc engine which spits out a generous 113PS at 11,250 revs and offers peak torque of 73NM at 9,100 rpm. Expect too to catch new metal from the likes of Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Honda, Indian, Kawasaki, KTM, Moto- Guzzi , Suzuki, Vespa and Yamaha. Indeed you could do worse than check out our photographic A-Zs of bikes that graced NEC stands at the close of 2016 for a read-reckoner of the bikes you might expect to see in East London. You'll find Aprilia to Indian here, Kawasaki to Royal Enfield here and Suzuki to Yamaha here. Likely highlights include Ducati's thoroughly awesome 1299 Superleggerra, Kawasaki's mighty mid-weight sports ZX650, Suzuki's sexy new GSX-R1000 and Yamaha's revamped YZF-R6. This year also sees the show hosting the inaugural London Custom Bike Championships. Set to attract serious international competition the contest will see Europe's most creative customisers battling it out in the Modified American V-Twin, Retro/Old School, Street Performance and Freelance classes. There also three Best In Show prizes up for grabs. Custom bike fans will also be able to check out some of the magnificent metal on the Principal Insurance stand R1330, as we once again lay on our own little biking bonanza. Vying for views will be 'Foundry Motorcycles' The Pipeline and Des Hooper's multi-award-winning Legend. Which is best? Well we'd best leave you to decide as our motorcycle insurance team has been chewing over this thorny question for sometime. The only firm conclusion drawn was that, well, sometimes you just have to agree to disagree. MCN London Motorcycle Show With its angular top deck and the stunning stainless exhaust that gave this gorgeous grunty machine its name, The Pipeline divides opinion. There's no question it's striking, indeed one of the most distinctive cafe racers you're ever likely to see. It began life as a Moto Guzzi 1100i Sport which Foundry stripped back to its very basics, the bare frame providing plenty of scope for engineering imagination. Principal Insurance London Motorcycle Show 2017Custom bike London Motorcycle ShowIntroduction of that curvaceous eye-catching pipe came down to two things. A desire to position the exhaust above the heads and specification of a down draught twin-choke Weber carb which eliminated the need for balancing. The latter required a sizeable inlet to the tank which informed design of the pipe which in turn set the tone for the rest of the build. 'Mega industrial' is how the Foundry put it.   If The Pipeline is a plus size model then The Legend is more akin to a bodybuilder, lithe, lean and yet still carrying enormous clout. Intriguingly the base point for this blue beaut was neither its 1800cc revtech engine nor its Midwest frame, but an air filter which Des admits he "took a shine to." MCN London Motorcycle Show From there he created this sleek stunner, with Midwest stepping in again to supply forks, legendary Harley-Davidson customiser Arlen Ness that distinctive twin-pipe and Des and co-conspirator Curly conjuring up those extended-v handlebars. It wasn't long before the bike was living up to its name, winning Best Custom at the Rock and Bike Show no fewer than three times. And whilst this machine will always add glamour to a stand, it's much more than a show bike. Des likes to get out and about on this 120mph eye-turner so don't be surprised if you catch sight of him and the legend that is The Legend on the highways and byways of the UK and beyond.   Arlen Ness exhaustStar of London Motorcycle Show 2017       So, what else have we got lined up for you? Well that would be telling now wouldn't it? Let's just say we've got a couple of tasty surprises up our sleeves. That's not just bikes but also the launch of a brand new promotion offering something absolutely free and potentially lifesaving to new and renewing Principal customers.
