Let there be Light Bike at NEC show!

Posted on Nov 14, 2016

Having already teased you with news of a gorgeous Brough Superior we’re now ready to shed light on another magnificent machine set to grace Principal’s NEC Motorcycle Live stand Light is most definitely the operative word as this star of the show is based upon the futuristic motorcycle ridden by Jeff Bridges in 1982 sci-fi thriller Tron and 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy. You can catch the celluloid creation by skipping to 2 minute 12 seconds on this official trailer but we think you’ll enjoy more seeing in the flesh the stunning tribute created by US customisers, the Parker Brothers. Appearing for the first time at a major UK bike show this machine was imported by W Specialist Cars (WSC). The Cheltenham-based firm is more normally enticed by prestige and high performance four wheelers of the kind which normally keeps our specialist car insurance experts busy, but this extraordinary motorcycle was too good to miss. Let’s face it, it’s going to draw eyes towards your showroom. The spec is unusual too. This is an all-electric bike, armed with a 40,000 watt direct drive motor powered by lithium-ion  batteries with the throttle, naturally enough, being computer controlled. That will give you an average 30 mile range on a 3.5 hour charge. Electric motorcycle inspired by Tron at NEC Motorcycle LiveConcessions to comfort include rebound and compression damping with spring-preload front suspension and rigid rear suspension, with hydraulic brakes back and front.  Having imported the Light Cycle WSC took into their own South West bodyshop, stripping it to its bare bones and treating it to stunning pearlescent black paint job of which MD Richard Teakle is rightly proud. “It looks lovely, absolutely lovely,” he enthuses, all misty-eyed. “Under a certain light the paintwork is just absolutely beautiful.” Set off by LED light strips which hug its monumental 32” hubless wheels and fibreglass chassis, this is indeed the motorcycle as art.   But it is also, technically at least, a bike you can ride. Richard can vouch for that having briefly straddled that futuristic frame. He does though concede that it’s not the sort of bike you’ll be taking for a spin around Box Hill or parking up at Matlock Bath. Practicality is not its strong point. “It is rideable but the riding position is outrageous and the maximum speed is about 35mph,” he chuckles. It is, though, not short of being street legal, should you fancy grabbing attention on UK roads. “Some lights at the front, indicators, very cosmetic things” should be enough to get it past VOSA he reckons. And if it does tickle your fancy then it is up for sale, yours for a cool £39,995. But don’t delay that chat with the bank manager as Richard reports interest from an enthusiast in – where else? – Dubai. The Light Cycle joins the Brough and six other magnificence machines which we’ll be proudly displaying in Hall 4 of the NEC. There you’ll also find our ever-helpful staff plus the Principal Insurance girls ready, as always, to hand you your free goody bags. These will again feature our free calendar incorporating some of the world’s most beautiful motorcycles in glorious, glossy technicolour!
