This month sees Principal Insurance’s tour of the British Isles’ best car and motorcycle shows reach Silverstone as the world famous Northamptonshire circuit plays host to the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival.
The
Silverstone Classic Weekend, is the BFG of the scene, a thoroughly lovable monster of a show at which you’ll find over 10,000 classic cars on proud display, a thousand or more of which will also take to the track to compete in some 20 races.
One of 52 shows and events our specialist motor
and motorcycle insurance teams are attending this year, it is something of a must-do for anyone with even only a passing interest in historic, high-performance and racing vehicles. Don’t get us wrong, this is show run by and for motor enthusiasts, but you needn’t be a committed petrolhead to succumb to its many charms.
With over 120 car clubs represented, there’s something for everyone, a veritable A-Z (well X, to be accurate) of magnificent motor marques and models, ranging from Alvis to XKs. Along the alphabetical way you’ll find the likes of the
Aston Martin Owners Club,
Austin Healey Club,
Bentley Drivers Club,
Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain,
The Ford RS Owners Club,
Healey Drivers Club,
Jaguar XK Car Club,
Maserati Club UK and
Stag Owners Club.

The breadth of vehicles on show is very much in tune with our own specialist motor insurance portfolio – classic, high value and high performance cars ranking highly on the bill. Many will be taking to the track to show just what they can do, hurtling down the Hangar Straight and storming Stowe Corner. It’s going to be a series of beauty parades – on speed.
This year’s racing is being augmented the
CanAm 50 Interserie Challenge, the final two race round in a brief series organised by
Masters Historic Racing to mark the 50
th anniversary of the North American Can Am Championship. Having already tackled the Brands Hatch and Donington circuits, the veteran CanAm sports prototype and racing two seaters, each presented in period specification, will do battle on the Northamptonshire track for what is the showpiece event of the series. It promises to be a seriously good watch, one soundtracked by the mighty roar of huge engines spitting out the horses in their thousands.
For somewhat more sedate entertainment check out the
RetroRun, a non-competitive showcase of pre-1996 and special interest cars. These will see vintage and classic cars departing the Northamptonshire circuit to complete either 60 and 100 mile routes visiting the likes of the
British Motor Museum and Renault’s F1 factory. Proud owners will then take part in a parade lap at Silverstone on Sunday.

Whilst obviously mainly about motors the Silverstone Classic is not short on wider attractions. These include aerial displays - apt given the site was originally a military airfield – from the Blades, Twister and Wildcat aerobatic crews and a live music bill that includes the Boomtown Rats (I Don’t Like Mondays, Mary of the 4
th Form), Stranglers (Golden Brown, Peaches) and Reef (Good Feeling, Place Your Hands). The roster also includes top tribute acts Live/Wire (Ac/DC), Ultimate Elton and Limehouse Lizzy.
It promises to be a great weekend and, if you fancy it, you’re advised to look lively as tickets must be booked in advance, which you can do by
clicking here. Day tickets start at £42 with a three-day weekender costing £114, with significant discounts for kids. The family ticket, which includes camping and entry for two adults and two children, looks good value at £326.
If you’re going, don’t forget to pop by and meet the Principal motor team. Our guys and gals will be on hand to chat through your particular
high performance,
prestige,
kit, replica and
classic car insurance needs.

The Silverstone Classic Weekend takes place from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st July at Silverstone Circuit, Towcester, Northamptonshire, NN12 8TN.
