Something for the weekend

Posted on Aug 27, 2015

Well, it's a bank holiday weekend - at least it is in England, Northern Ireland and Wales - and so, with crushing inevitability, the Met Office has issued flood warnings. But fear not  as not only is the forecast somewhat perkier weather for Monday, but, if the meteorologists are right, the rest of the week is looking more settled and the onset of autumn marked by that rare beast, the British sun. But whatever the weather you've got to do something other than watching yet again a 10 year old Wallace & Gromit film, haven't you? Thankfully there's a fair few things to see and do over the weekend. For bikers the pickings are far from slim. For lovers of expansive Celtic tinged rock, then head for the Victoria Bikers' Pub in Coalville, Leicestershire which is hosting Big Country on Sunday (£20, call 01530 814718 for availability) , an anthemic precursor to the venue's  Wicked Wild Custom Show. Meanwhile over in leafy Cheshire  on Sunday there's a bit of something for everyone at the Cheshire Classic Car & Motorcycle Show (Adults £8, kids ££, under-7s fee) where some 4-500 vehicles are set to be displayed amidst the magnificent grounds of Capesthorne Hall, Macclesfield. The event is double-billed with the North West  Summer Mercedes Benz Day so it has a particularly pull for lovers of the luxury German marque, but there is a veritable vehicle variety show line up to offer broad appeal. True classics from the pre-50s era - your Singers, Rileys and Rovers - will mingle with more modern marvels from MG, Porsche and the like. A tasty classic bike section is also promised featuring timeless beauties including BSA, Norton and Velocette machines.  For more details click here. Meanwhile the bill for 10th Blenheim Festival of Transport reads like an homage to the Principal policy portfolio featuring as it does everything from class cars (Sunday's main feature) through  motorcycles, kit & custom cars, Minis, VWs, Americans, commercial and military vehicles. Over 1,000 vehicles are set for display at Blenheim Palace, Oxon, with plenty of owners clubs joining the ranks, including the Porsche Club GB, Jaguar Enthusiasts Club and TVR Car Club. Entry is included within the Palace's normal ticket fees, so £13.80 for adults, £10.40 concessions and kids £6.70 and families £36.50. However you decide to spend this, the last bank holiday before - whisper it! - Christmas, have a good and safe one.
