Motorhome insurance enquiries double as lockdown eases

Posted on Apr 19, 2021

Motorhome insurance enquiries have nearly doubled following the easing of UK lockdown restrictions. Continued uncertainty about whether foreign travel will be possible - or practical - this summer have also been credited with fuelling the surge in quotes. In the first two weeks of April, Principal saw requests for specialist motorhome insurance quotes soar by over 90%. motorhome insurance"Whilst all our personal lines have recorded growth, motorhome and campervan insurance has led the way by some distance" commented managing director, Dave Bowcock. "It seems people are looking to make the very most of the easing of Covid restrictions and get out and enjoy the UK's coast and countryside. "The arrival of the sun has no doubt helped too mind you."

Doors opening

He reports that the surge shows no sign of easing as the UK nations prepare for the re-opening of indoor hospitality venues such as pubs and restaurant. England hope to throw open the doors to socially-distance indoor hospitality from Monday May 17th.  Wales' tourism leaders are pushing the Welsh government to follow suit on the same day. Scotland may reopen - with restrictions - some indoor hospitality venues as early as next week, with broader easing, such as allowing  alcohol sales, also pencilled for May 17th. In Northern Ireland it is hoped that outdoor hospitality venues can reopen from April 30th, with indoor service set to resume from May 24th.

Perfect pitch

Many camping and caravan sites have already reopened. For example, The Caravan Club last week announced all its sites in England & Wales are now open, subject to members and their guests registering under the Track and Trace scheme. "Motorhomes and campervans provide a key to freedom," said Mr Bowcock. "Being self-contained they're more Covid safe than most holiday accommodation and, of course, offer much more flexibility. It's little wonder they've proven so popular in the peculiar and restrictive times we've been living in." He added that for similar reasons Principal has also seen a significant uplift in its motorcycle insurance quotes. "Whilst we would always expect bike insurance sales to rise at this time if year, we've seen a jump of more than 25% this far in April. "The lifting of some lockdown restrictions has clearly helped, particularly the return of motorcycle training and CBT testing, as has the arrival of the sun. "For many bikers, riding is a passion and so they get back on their bikes at the earliest opportunity."
