Our specialist learner driver insurance – also known as provisional driver insurance – provides cover for provisional licence holders as they receive driving tuition.
It insures the learner driver directly when they are driving their own car or another vehicle.
It is valid when the learner is accompanied by a driver aged over 25 who has held a full driving licence for a minimum of three years.
One good reason is cost. Often it is cheaper to take out a policy in the learner’s name, than to add them as a named driver to another car insurance policy.
Also, with this policy, should the learner driver need make a claim when driving an insured car they do not own, it will not affect the no claims bonus of the vehicle’s owner.
Another, even more compelling reason, is that it is of course a legal requirement to be insured when learning to drive on public roads!
The cover we offer is specifically designed for holders of a provisional driving licence aged between 17 and 21 years.
We know from our experience in moped and scooter insurance that this can often include young riders who, as well as using their provisional licence to ride on two-wheels, are also learning to drive on four.
If that’s you, this policy could be a great choice!
If terms like comprehensive insurance and no claims bonus leave you scratching your head, please see our FAQs page.
The provisional licence insurance we arrange is designed specifically to cover learner drivers.
It’s ideal if you’re keen to put in some extra hours’ learning outside of tuition you receive from a professional instructor.
Gain skills and confidence
That additional time can help you hone your driving skills and gain confidence in readiness for your practical driving test.
Remember though that once you pass your test and rip up those L plates, it will no longer be valid.
You will then need take out traditional car insurance that covers you as a fully qualified driver.
If, having passed your test, you continue to drive on learner driver insurance you are liable for prosecution. You must take out a standard car insurance policy.
With this policy, should you need make a claim, you can avoid paying the compulsory excess – the amount you would pay towards the cost of a claim – under a dash camera endorsement.
All you need do to avoid that excess – which will be a minimum of £250 – is provide the insurer with dash cam footage within 48 hours of an accident. The excess fee will be waived whether you are at fault or not.
This enables the driver who has been supervising you to drive you home in an emergency or immediately after you’ve passed your test.
This learner driver insurance policy offers a range of other benefits. These include:
The following benefits are included only with comprehensive cover and if you are the registered keeper/owner of the insured vehicle:
