Is there any such thing as cheap convicted driver insurance?
Let’s put our cards on the table here.
If you’ve been found guilty of a serious motoring offence such as drink, drug, careless or dangerous driving, then you can expect your premium to be loaded. Some insurers may not even offer you a quote.
If you’re honest you’ll understand why – and that, in addition to any court or licence penalties, this is the price you pay for your past mistakes.
Here at Principal we recognise that many drivers can learn from those mistakes. We treat every driver as an individual. We are always happy to talk through your circumstances and options with you so we can find the best available deal offered through our specialist panel of motor insurers.
We can also discuss how you might minimise your convicted car driver insurance quote. Here it’s important to remember that your conviction is only part of the mix. Insurers will take into account a range of factors when calculating your quote. These will include your age, driving experience, vehicle, occupation and address.
It might be that you can take action to reduce your car insurance quote.
Secure parking
If you are able to park your car in a garage or private drive, rather than on the public road outside your home, this may reduce your premium.
Telematics
Another potential money-saver is to have a ‘black box’ fitted to your car. This telematics device will monitor how you drive and the miles you do. Your insurer will then be able to see how carefully and attentively you drive.
Change your vehicle
If you’re really struggling you might want to consider changing your car. It’s a simple equation: vehicles in higher insurance groups attract higher premiums.
High performance cars, with their powerful acceleration and superior top speeds, will be found among the top end of the 50 car insurance groups. Trading down for a more modest motor could help.
Agree a voluntary excess
Some insurers may reduce your premium if you agree to pay a higher excess. The excess is the amount you must pay towards the cost of any claim you make on your policy.
Rehabilitation courses
If you have a drink-driving conviction, some insurers may look more kindly upon you if you have subsequently completed a drink-driving rehabilitation course.
Reduce your mileage
If you drive fewer miles, then you will lower your overall risk.
