Riding or driving in the EU: The new rules

Following the end of the Brexit transition period and the agreement struck between the EU and UK Government, the rules regarding riding or driving in Europe have changed. This includes travel to the Republic of Ireland.

The good news is that agreement, ratified by parliament on 30 December 2020, means we have avoided more onerous obligations.

For example, there had been concerns that UK riders and motorists would need to buy International Driving Permits. The agreement removes that need.

However, from 01 January 2021, riders and drivers will need secure a Green Card to travel in the EU.

Green cards will also be required for travel in Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

What is a Green Card and how do you get one?

A Green Card is an international certificate of insurance issued by your insurer. It is a physical document that will need to be posted to you.

Holding a Green Card will mean you will satisfy the minimum legal motor insurance requirement of countries  in the EU, EEA as well as Andorra, Serbia and Switzerland. A Green Card provides only Third Party motor insurance.

If you will be towing a trailer or caravan, you must secure a separate Green Card for this.

Green Cards are usually valid for 90 days.

How can you get a Green Card?

We will be pleased to secure you a Green Card from your insurer.

As different insurers will have different policies and procedures, this should make things easier for you.

There is no charge for this service – it is free to you.

There are two ways you can request a Green Card.

1. Emailing us by clicking here.

Please make sure you include your full name (as it appears on your insurance documents) and policy number/broker reference. Please also include a number we can contact you on to confirm cover.

2. Calling us:

  •  If you are a motorcycle, multi-vehicle, van, motorhome or specialist vehicle policyholder, please call 0330 024 1730.
  • If you are a car policyholder please call 0330 053 9581.

As this is a new legal requirement and demand will be high, it is important you allow plenty of time for your Green Card to arrive. We would advise you apply for your Green Card at least 21 working days prior to your proposed departure from the UK.
