Met Police targets moped riders with fresh ‘Lock, Chain, Cover’ campaign

The Metropolitan Police has relaunched its Be Safe campaign which urges moped, scooter and motorcycle owners to ‘Lock, Chain, Cover’ their machines.

The 2019 campaign comes after the force reported that following several integrated initiatives thefts fell by 36% last year.

Nonetheless that still meant over 9,000 bikes were stolen last year.

Chief Inspector Corbett from the Met’s Operation Venice, which targets moped thefts and associated crime in the capital, said:

Officers from Operation Venice, which tackles moped and motorcycle crime, and from around the Met, have worked hard to reduce theft over the last year, but we need the help of vehicle owners to drive this down further.

“A large number of bikes are still left with no additional security measures in place and only a steering lock to prevent them from being stolen.

It only takes seconds for a thief to steal one, if it’s unprotected. Using additional security reduces the chances of your bike being stolen, which is reduced even further if multiple measures are used.

We’re asking owners to assist us by layering security – lock, chain and cover your bike.

“Thieves often ‘shop for models’ and look for the easiest bikes to steal. If your bike is covered, it’s less likely to draw the attention of thieves.”

Lock, Chain, Cover

Whilst operating across the capital, the campaign will target areas suffering the highest theft levels. These will include Barnet, Brent, Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and the City of Westminster.”

Of course the core message – to secure your bike with Lock, Chain, Cover – is one that should resonate with riders across the country.

Principal Insurance is once again supporting the campaign along with other partners including  the Motorcycle Industries Association.

Lock, Chain, Cover to protect your bike

Explain the purpose of the campaign, Chief Inspector Corbett added:

“Our campaign contains a number of different elements which we hope will remind owners to use security.

A video highlighting the risk of theft and online adverts, boosted by key search terms, will help raise awareness.

Our advertising will be seen across London, on bus rears and on pavement stencils at motorcycle parking bays which have seen high numbers of thefts.

We hope these messages will also deliver a reminder to riders when parking their bikes.”

There’s another reason to up the ante when it comes to protecting your moped, scooter or motorcycle. Hard cash.

For obvious reasons some insurers offer discounts – they vary – on your motorcycle, moped or scooter insurance if you make use of insurance approved security devices.

Typically, but not universally, these devices will be labelled as “Thatcham approved” meaning they’ve been put through their paces at the‘not for profit’ insurer funded research centre.

But as both discounts and devices considered vary between insurers, it’s worth checking with our friendly bike insurance specialists.
