Back in 1972 three great men, – Valerio Bianchi, Giusseppe Morri and Massimo Tamburini – founded Bimota Motorcycles. The name comes from the first two letters of the trio’s name, but it is the ‘ta’ who can take greatest credit for the acclaim and adoration from which Bimota custom motorcycles benefits.
Tamburini’s extraordinary design eye and engineering skill ensured the now famous motorcycle builders marque made its mark, producing custom motorcycles which harnessed the engines of Yamaha, Ducati and more, to Massimo’s stunning frames. As with many European motorcycle manufacturers Bimota’s history is chequered. The over-ambitiously designed custom motorcycle 500cc V-twin V Due suffered various mechanical problems, leading to a full recall just as the company suffered a major cash loss following the collapse of a racing sponsor. The result was its bankruptcy in 2000, although the phoenix rose again in 2003.
That was the low, but the highs were many, including the wicked custom cycles Tesi 3D, poweredby a Ducati 1100DS engine and featuring a front swingarm with hub centre steering. It was, said MotorCycle News, a work of art. Outside of Bimota, Tamburini’s genius hand can also be seen on Ducati’s 916 and MV Augusta’s FV.
